MERIDEN FAMILY ZONE GETS EDUCATION PLANNING GRANT
House Speaker Christopher G. Donovan spoke at a press conference hosted by Congressman Chris Murphy announcing that Meriden Children First has received a $460,000 planning grant from the U.S. Department of Education to further develop the Meriden Family Zone pilot program. The program educates children from identified neighborhood blocks, involves families in their education, and helps create communities to support educational pursuits.

SPEAKER HONORED BY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE COALITION
US Sen. Richard Blumenthal, CCADV Interim Director Karen Jarmoc and House Speaker Christopher G. Donovan at the CCADV breakfast in Cromwell in September. Speaker Donoven received the domestic violence coalition's "Coalition Crusader" award for his commitment to ending domestic violence in Connecticut, and along with Sen. Blumenthal was named one of the "First 100" men making a difference for domestic violence victims.

SPEAKER OPENS PUBLIC HEARINGS ON IRENE
House Speaker Christopher G. Donovan opened legislative hearings on the state's preparedness for and response to Tropical Storm Irene at the Capitol Monday. He said everyone in the state was touched by Irene, and it was the legislature's responsibility to understand "what worked and what didn't in terms of how we prepared and how we responded. Too many suffered without power for too long, jeopardizing their health, safety and livelihoods. That's why it is appropriate at this time to convene legislative hearings."

Speaker Donovan meets with Chair of State Legislators Working Group on Health Reform
Speaker Donovan and Rep. Betsy Ritter, Co-Chair of the Public Health Committee, recently met with Iowa State Senator Jack Hatch, who chairs the National State Legislators Working Group on Health Reform. The lawmakers discussed Connecticut's health reform efforts and the state's progress in establishing its Health Insurance Exchange, a major piece of the 2010 federal health reform law. Connecticut's exchange will provide families and small businesses with a marketplace that offers affordable, high quality health insurance options.

In his hometown of Meriden on April 15, 2011. He told students they deserved the same resources for a successful education as nay high school in the state, and vowed to continue fighting for the state's vocational and technical high schools.

Speaker Takes Sen. Blumenthal on Meriden Tour
Meriden's economic revitalization was the topic of conversation today as U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) joined House Speaker Christopher G. Donovan (D-Meridan) and Meriden Mayor Mike Rohde for a tour of several Meriden sites that are the focus of economic development. The Mills public housing, the downtown Hub area, Factory H, the Quinnipiac River walking trail, and the Meriden Train Station were stops along the hour-long tour.

Speaker Donovan is joined by students of Meriden Adult Education and Director, Donald H. Friedman.
