Newtown Students Testify on Cyberbullying

Dear Neighbors:

The 2011 legislative session moved Connecticut forward with the passage of bills designed to support you and your families. While I spent time working on several statewide issues, much of my time this session was spent working with town officials and my colleagues in the legislature, as well as Newtown residents, to address many situations and concerns specific to our community.

I am energized by the collaborative nature of our first selectwoman and my Republican colleagues in the legislature. Together, we achieved great things for our community, and we will continue to troubleshoot, problem-solve, and work together to implement a vision for our community and state.

In order to do this, the State must continue to examine its tax and spending habits to ensure that communities like Newtown are not hurt. While still an imperfect budget, Newtown faired well this session in that we will receive more funding as a town than in years past, education will maintain level funding, and school projects continue to move forward with the aid and support of the State.

While there is much to be done with regards to how we budget and account for statewide expenses, the State took two major steps to ensure transparency and accountability. First, Governor Malloy, through an executive order, implemented Generally Accepted Accounting Principles to state government. Second, the State implemented a program to track all state expenses. It is now available to the public at www.transparency.ct.gov.

As we look ahead to the future, fiscal challenges remain. While I am truly optimistic about Connecticut's economic recovery, I remain realistic about the absolute necessity to prevent wasteful spending, limit borrowing and keep taxes in check. I will continue to work towards those goals as your voice in the State Capitol. Please continue to contact me with your questions and concerns.

All my best,

Lyddy Signature
Christopher Lyddy, State Representative
