STATE LAW DELIVERS ADDED REVENUE FOR NORWICH
Motor vehicle violation surcharge goes to towns
State Representative Melissa Olson, who represents Norwich in the Connecticut General Assembly, said legislation passed in 2006 has yielded thousands-of-dollars of revenue for Norwich. The law applies a $10 surcharge to motor vehicle violations that is then given to the municipality where the violation occurred. READ MORE

HOUSE AND SENATE PASS GOOD SAMARITAN PROTECTIONS FOR AEDs
Deputy Majority Leader Melissa Olson (D-Norwich) announced House and Senate passage of legislation that provides Good Samaritan immunity for an organization or facility that grants public access to an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). The legislation will allow youth sports programs, churches, health clubs, and businesses to acquire an AED without fear of liability. Users of an AED are also covered by this Good Samaritan protection. READ MORE

A REGIONAL APPROACH WOULD EASE THE BURDEN
ON TAXPAYERS
There is an interesting dance at the State Capitol every year. Mayors and other municipal chief executives come to Hartford looking for more state funding and state officials do their best to oblige, recognizing the importance of municipal aid and its effect on property taxes. In good times, we find the money. In bad times, we hold the line. In bad times of historic proportions….well, that is where we are today… we have the opportunity to do something historic. READ MORE

EASTERN CONNECTICUT TOWNS LOOK AT JOINING FORCES
TO SAVE DOUGH
The desire to cut costs during a down economy is leading to greater talk about "regionalization" in public education and other government services, although what form it will take is anybody's guess. Starting small and building on success is the tack being taken by Norwich's Superintendent of Schools Pamela Aubin. While saying moves could lead to a regional board of education, Aubin now is looking to create a "curriculum continuum" stretching from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade. READ MORE

REP. OLSON APPOINTED TO TWO LEADERSHIP POSITIONS
State Representative Melissa Olson (D-Norwich) was appointed by House Majority Leader Denise Merrill (D-Storrs, Mansfield) to serve in the position of co-chair of House Democrats’ Screening Committee. The Screening Committee reviews all legislation before it is debated by the full House of Representatives. The committee reviews legislation for technical accuracy and provides a measure of quality control.
