Biography

Dick Roy is a ten-term State Representative from the 119th District, the southeastern portion of Milford. Dick is a 65-year-old free-lance writer doing business under the name The Write Choice. He is married to Patricia Flanagan Roy, a first grade teacher at St. Mark School in Stratford. They live in the Woodmont section and are the parents of two grown daughters, Richelle and Aimee and have two granddaughters, Rhiannon and Shea.

Dick worked at the now defunct New Haven Journal-Courier, the former morning newspaper out of New Haven, starting while still a freshman at New Haven College. He took early retirement from the newspaper at the end of 1986 and began his free-lance writing career. Dick also was a substitute teacher for nine years at West Haven High School, an adjunct instructor in journalism and communications at the University of New Haven for 15 years and taught post-graduate English courses at Milford Academy for two years.

Dick has served on the Woodmont Day Committee for more than 30 years, serving as co-chairman three times; is a former member of the Board of Directors for the Milford Chamber of Commerce, a member and past president of Milford Pride, a member of the Environmental Concerns Coalition, a former volunteer firefighter with the Woodmont Fire Company and an usher at St. Agnes Church and a member of the parish’s St. Joseph’s Men’s Society.

Dick received the the Milford Pride White Glove Award in 1992, Chamber Director of the Year Award in 1992, the Milford Arts Council Arts Advocacy Award in 1993, the Environmental Concerns Coalition's Vision of Milford Award in 1996.

He also received the Safety Leader Award from the National Highway and Auto Safety Council in 1995 for zero-tolerance legislation aimed an underage drinkers who then were caught driving and was named "Outstanding Legislator in Reducing Underage Drinking in 2005.

He was the recipient of the American Diabetes Association, Connecticut Chapter, Appreciation Award in 1996 for his work on legislation mandating insurance coverage of diabetes supplies and was named Humane State Legislator by the United States Humane Society in 2007. The Connecticut Farm Bureau honored Dick as Legislator of the Year in 2006.

Dick, whose mother was the former Kathleen Callahan, was Grand Marshal of the 2002 St. Patrick's Day Parade in 2002.

Dick serves as House chair of the Environment Committee and is a member of the Public Safety and Executive Nominations Committees. He is a vice chair of the Committee on Agriculture, Environment and Energy with the National Council of State Legislatures, working with legislators from across the country that will help forge the country's direction well into the future. He also serves on the Environment Committee for the Northeast Region of the State Council of Governments.
