HAMDEN'S CHILDREN'S CENTER & OPPORTUNITY HOUSE AWARDED STATE GRANTS
The Children's Center is receiving $117,000 for building improvements, while Opportunity House was awarded $79,656 for new vehicles.
UTILITIES SHOULD SHOW NEED FOR TREE TRIMMING
Due to concerns expressed by residents about over-aggressive tree trimming by utility companies, such as UI and CL&P, I am working on legislation (HB5408) that would balance protecting the tree canopy and the unique character of our neighborhoods with the need to protect power lines. READ MORE
"REVERSE PILOT" WILL HELP TOWNS LOWER PROPERTY TAXES
In order to help towns reduce the local property tax burden on hardworking families, I have proposed a "Reverse PILOT" system where tax-exempt non-profit entities such as private colleges and hospitals, would begin to pay property taxes directly to the town, and then apply for a reimbursement for a portion of those payments from the state. STATE GRANT EXPECTED FOR HAMDEN SCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS
A state grant for upgrades to a number of Hamden school playgrounds is expected to be approved when the state Bond Commission meets Friday, February 28. READ MORE
THE PASSING OF STATE REPRESENTATIVE ELAINE O'BRIEN
It is with great sorrow that I share the news that Representative Elaine O'Brien has passed away after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Elaine served the 61st District and the entire State of Connecticut with great distinction fighting for the needs of all of our citizens. Elaine was a great friend to all of us, her beautiful smile and great sense of humor will be missed. RAISING MINIMUM WAGE HELPS FAMILIES, GOOD FOR ECONOMY
One of the most important new laws that took effect last week, is a long overdue increase in the state's minimum wage. Beginning January 1, Connecticut's minimum wage increased from $8.25 per hour to $8.70. It will increase again on January 1, 2015 to $9.00. READ MORE
