Accepts football coaching position at University of Nebraska

Connecticut Speaker of the House Joe Aresimowicz (D- Berlin, Southington) announced that he is stepping down as the top leader of the state House of Representatives and leaving the legislature.

Aresimowicz, who is also the head football coach in his hometown Berlin High School, has accepted a full-time assistant coaching position at the University of Nebraska. Former UConn head coach Bob Diaco is the defensive coordinator for the Cornhuskers, and Aresimowicz will be coaching the defensive backs under Diaco.

“This is an incredible opportunity, a true dream job, and I know I would regret it if I didn’t give it a go,” Aresimowicz said. “I love Connecticut and the challenge of improving the quality of life for everyone here - leaving it all behind is one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had.”

Aresimowicz said everything happens for a reason, noting that he never even met Diaco before the former Notre Dame defensive coordinator left the Fighting Irish to come to Storrs. “I know everyone who follows UConn football is disappointed in the results from Coach Diaco’s tenure here, but frankly I may never have had this chance if Bob didn’t come to UConn. It’s quite an irony for sure,” Aresimowicz said.

Aresimowicz said he has thought over and over, kind of like Groundhog Day, about taking his coaching skills to next level, but finally concluded his best chance was to make the move on April Fools' Day.
