Capitol Hall of Flags

June 30, 2016

It was an honor to welcome Wethersfield resident and World War II veteran Joe Civitillo and his family to the Capitol this morning as Joe donated his 296th Engineer Combat Battalion flag to the Hall of Flags. This is a permanent display on the first floor of the Capitol that features flags from various time periods beginning with the Civil War.

During World War II, Joe served thirty-six months in the United States Army’s 296th Engineer Combat Battalion beginning in France, then Belgium, and finally Germany. Joe and the Battalion were tasked with building replacements bridges across Europe as many had been destroyed by German troops. They bravely faced great obstacles in completing this important work. The work of the Battalion will forever be remembered by those who visit the Hall of the Flags.
