Grand Opening for Rogers School

September 1, 2016

I was so happy to be part of the opening of the newly expanded and upgraded Rogers International Inter-District Magnet School. The school at 200 Strawberry Hill Ave. opened to 240 kindergartners and first-graders Thursday after a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

This is such a wonderful day for the Stamford community. As Stamford’s public school enrollment keeps growing, students and parents now have another incredible option at Rogers School.

  • The $62 million state investment to expand Rogers School will help ease overcrowding in our other schools.
    • Attendance in Stamford Public Schools has grown by nearly 5,000 new students in the past fifteen years and more growth is expected in the future.
    • Enrollment has jumped from 11,394 students in the 1989-1990 school year to 16,069 students in the 2013-2014 school year.
    • Growing demand has strained existing schools to their limits. Many of Stamford’s schools are not equipped with modern small group instruction spaces and other necessary educational features.
      • This has resulted in classrooms being forced to host multiple classes, the loss of dedicated music and art rooms, and the repurposing of offices, storage rooms and hallways as classroom space.
      • Expanding the Rogers School will help Stamford meet the need for additional space.

Stamford received $61 million from the state for school construction and another $900,000 in operating funds.
