Essay Contest Announcement!

March 31, 2016

House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz (D-Berlin/Southington) is sponsoring an essay contest for local middle school students.

Rep. Aresimowicz is asking 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from Berlin and Southington to submit essays of 250 to 500 words describing one project or initiative that would help improve their community. In these essays, students should include why they think the project is needed and how it will help their town.

"Kids have so many great thoughts and ideas, but too often they don’t voice those ideas because they may be afraid or they don’t think that they can make a difference," Aresimowicz said. "This essay contest allows me to not only hear from students in the communities that I represent, but it encourages them and gives them the confidence to always feel that they can speak their minds and voice their ideas.”

Official citations from the General Assembly will be presented to top entries. One student from each town will also be invited to the State Capitol for a special lunch with Rep. Aresimowicz and a private tour of the Capitol and Legislative Office Building.

Students should submit their essays by May 2nd and include their name, address and date of birth or current grade level with their submissions. Essays should be emailed to Rep. Aresimowicz at with "Essay Contest" in the subject line.
