Hate Crime Bill Passes House

May 10, 2017

I was very pleased to have supported this legislation and to see it pass unanimously in the House. This bill makes it clear that our state will not tolerate hate crimes and we have backed that up with this legislation. I look forward to Senate approval.

House Bill 5743 makes the commission of a hate crime a felony and increases potential penalties upon a conviction. The bill also makes violence and threats based on gender prosecutable as a hate crime and make threats against houses of worship or other religious facilities a more serious felony charge.

The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration. The Connecticut General Assembly 2017 Regular Session began January 4th and adjourns June 7th.
