Saddened By Closure of WQUN-Am (1220)

State Representative Josh Elliott expressed his concern over the recent announcement by Quinnipiac University that its community radio station, WQUN-AM (1220), will be closed and cease operations June 30.

“I am saddened that what I consider truly to be a community asset will no longer exist to serve and provide news and information to Hamden’s citizens and our region of the state,” Rep. Elliott said. “The closing of a radio media outlet that served us so well is another sign of the difficulty of running a news outlet in the age of the internet.”

Rep. Elliott said he read the university’s explanation that they will shift resources to meet the future needs of their students as they prepare them for future employment opportunities, but the loss of the station to listeners and supporters will be hard to replace.

Rep. Elliott praised the full-time professional employees of the station, particularly news department personnel, “who over many years dedicated themselves in providing the community with such a valuable service.”

“I have experienced first-hand being interviewed by the station’s news professionals and participated in what the station offered,” Rep. Elliott said, “So I will feel a personal loss when the station ceases operation.”
