SPEAKER DONOVAN ADDRESSES CROWD AT RALLY FOR SUSTINET HEALTH CARE REFORM
Anticipating the release of the SustiNet Board's legislative recommendations to improve health care in Connecticut, House Speaker Christopher G. Donovan joined the Interfaith Fellowship for Universal Health Care, Governor-Elect Dan Malloy, Lt. Governor-Elect Nancy Wyman, state officials, and hundreds of people from communities of faith, labor, small business and health care professionals at Emanuel Lutheran Church on December 14th to rally in support of SustiNet. The goal of SustiNet is to establish a publicly run health insurance plan to rein in costs, promote wellness and make better use of the $7 billion the state spends on health care.
April 13, 2010 - Speaker of the House Chris Donovan joined Comptroller Nancy Wyman and other legislators to call for passage of legislation that would give municipalities the ability to buy prescription drugs through the state employee plan. By taking advantage of the bargaining power, low administrative costs and substantial discounts negotiated by the large state employee pool, municipalities could see substantial savings in their health care costs. The end result would be property tax relief to Connecticut citizens.
March 2, 2010 - House Speaker Christopher G. Donovan (D-Meriden) joined municipal officials, union leaders and healthcare advocates in submitting testimony in support of a bill allowing municipalities to purchase prescription drug coverage through the state plan.
November 23, 2009 - Speaker of the House Chris Donovan hosted US Congressman Chris Murphy in a discussion centering around national healthcare reform. Congressman Murphy answered questions from legislators and activists and took time to outline the potential improvements to American healthcare if bills in the US House and Senate are enacted. Murphy also praised Speaker Donovan and the Connecticut legislature for helping shape new laws in Washington aimed at protecting America's uninsured and underinsured citizens.
September 10, 2009 - Speaker of the House, Chris Donovan, moderated a roundtable discussion on Federal and Statewide Health Insurance Reform at the Community Health Center in Meriden on September 9th. The Speaker joined a panel of healthcare professionals and health insurance reform advocates to address the concerns of Connecticut citizens adversly effected by the current healthcare system.
July 7, 2009 - Health care advocates and business leaders, gathered at the Capitol to urge Governor Rell to sign landmark healthcare reform legislation- the Connecticut Healthcare Partnership and the SustiNet bills. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn), other legislators and healthcare advocates this afternoon to personally deliver the landmark Connecticut Healthcare Partnership and SustiNet bills to the Governors office at the State Capitol.

This Partnership would open the State Employees Union Healthcare pool to municipalities and small businesses. As towns and small businesses voluntarily join the pool becomes larger and the bulk purchasing power will drive health insurance costs down. The Plan has been championed and passed successfully in the CT House of Representatives by Speaker of the House Christopher G. Donovan.
