Protecting Immigrants and Immigrant Families in CT

November 19, 2024
On Monday, I joined members of our immigrant, refugee, advocate, and legal communities, in addition to local leaders at the State Capitol to rally to protect immigrants and immigrant families here in Connecticut.

Attorney General William Tong also told his personal story of his father and mother’s journey from "undocumented" to becoming Americans and his first-generation birthright citizenship experience.

My job as a legislative leader is to protect all our people, and fund our services, especially health care, education and public safety. I also work to pass laws like the updates to the Trust Act we did in 2019, which is legislation that:
  • Prohibits law enforcement from detaining someone solely on the basis of a Civil Immigration Detainer, which is an administrative request, unless it is accompanied by a judicial warrant, or if the person is guilty of our most serious felonies or is on the terrorist watch list
  • Limits information sharing with ICE
  • Law enforcement must inform individual when ICE has requested their detention
  • Includes “School Police and Security Department” and adds “bail commissioners” and “probation officers” under the definition of law enforcement for purposes of disclosing information to ICE

Now more than ever, we have to make sure Connecticut does not become entangled by the actions of the federal government. While we need to maintain public safety by cooperating with federal authorities in certain cases, we must also strike the right balance and protect the trust built with communities.

That is why I am proud to stand with our Attorney General and other Attorneys General across the country to protect our people and keep each other safe. Please join me in this effort, whether it is at the State Capitol or in our communities.
