Dear Neighbor,

Health care is not only a necessity, it's an essential human right, and so critical now when federal budget negotiations threaten to end healthcare access for millions of our residents. Several of my colleagues and I have been fighting for years to increase Husky insurance coverage (Medicaid) for all eligible young people, regardless of documentation status. On Tuesday I spoke at a news briefing at the Capitol with members of the group Husky4Immigrants, as well as health care providers, social workers and advocates.

Husky4Immigrants delivered its letter -- signed by 375 people in support of Husky coverage for immigrants until age 26 -- to Sen. President Pro Tempore Martin Looney and House Speaker Matthew Ritter. The law currently provides Husky coverage for undocumented immigrants until the age of 15. If we can't extend health insurance coverage in one of the most prosperous areas of the world, then shame on us.

Please see my comments below.

Nonprofit Alliance Day

Thrilled to join Abilis employees on Nonprofit Alliance Day. Abilis is one of only 11 organizations licensed by the state to provide autism-specific diagnostic and intensive interventions to the Birth to Three age group.

It does its amazing work in Fairfield County, including 135th District, and I'm grateful for it.

Kickball Victory

I joined the House Democratic kickball team in its victory over Capitol Republicans in the CGA Kickball Classic on Monday, May 12. Proceeds from the event will go to CT Foodshare.

It's always nice to take a little break from the intense work at the legislature to have a little fun with our colleagues on both sides of the aisle.

DOT Vegetation Work on Route 136

Route 136 between Mills Land and Redding/Old Redding Road in Easton will be closed on Wednesday, May 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. as the CTDOT will conduct a vegetation management safety improvement operation.

To improve public safety, the DOT is removing dead, diseased, and decaying trees. Additionally, trees and vegetation that have grown into the clear zone, which is the safety space along the side of the roadway, are also being removed.

Eversource Bill Reductions

After PURA voted to approve rate adjustments, starting on May 1 and continuing through April 30, 2026, Eversource customers will see their monthly bills decrease on average by $13.5 per month. The lower rates come as the state sees better conditions regarding power purchases from New England nuclear power stations including Millstone.

Social Media Safety Alert

Public safety officials across the state are issuing warnings about the dangerous social media trend in which students are encouraged to short-circuit their personal or school-issued electronic devices by inserting pencil lead or other conductive objects into the USB or other charge ports.

The short circuit often results in sparks and can ignite a fire, which could easily spread. It can also lead the internal battery to experience thermal runaway and ignition.

“It is vitally important that youth and adults take fire risks seriously and recognize the danger inherent to these types of social media ‘challenges’,” says the State Fire Marshal, Lauri Volkert. “Fire can become uncontrolled and turn deadly in just a few seconds.” For more information, visit here.
