Dear Neighbor,

I was honored to stand with our non-profit community this week in a crucial rally at the Capitol. This 2,500-person turnout demanding more funding now, sent a message of crisis and, importantly, solidarity among the all community nonprofit sector to the legislature as we finalize a two year budget.

These non-profit services are the backbones of their communities, providing critical services to our most vulnerable populations. As a former human services worker in the trenches, I know first-hand the critical work they do, and without increased state funding to create a livable wage, these services are at risk of collapsing.

We need a state budget that meets the moment to cover the ever-increasing cost of taking care of our communities, and respects the dignity of the skilled workforce that is indeed, essential.

Trust Act Expansion

I voted on Wednesday in support of strengthening the Trust Act, which passed overwhelmingly.

If the Senate passes the measure and Gov. Ned Lamont signs it into law, the Trust Act's expansion will prevent Connecticut public agencies from sharing information with ICE and stop individuals from being arrested or detained at courthouses based solely on civil immigration detainers. There are important exceptions for individuals convicted of Class C or above felonies, and those involving sexual violence or crimes involving children.

The timeliness of this legislation is rooted in fairness, dignity, and public safety in these perilous times.

Other Legislation that Passed

House Democrats passed legislation on Monday that saves money for every employer in the state, since all of them faced skyrocketing workers’ compensation claims costs after a CT Supreme Court ruling. This legislation was a top priority of businesses and municipalities and saves them millions of dollars. Business advocates estimate workers’ compensation costs would have increased 265% absent any action.

Connecticut is joining states like Oregon and Colorado and taking a step toward harm reduction. The House just passed a bill to decriminalize psilocybin in small amounts.

Donate Life

I joined members of the Connecticut Coalition for Organ and Tissue Donation at the State Capitol to promote and educate about organ, eye, and tissue donation and increase the number of transplants that save lives.
