Dear Neighbor,

In addition to a couple of legislative sessions, this week I spent some time in East Hartford on the picket line with striking Pratt & Whitney workers and fellow members of the House Democratic Progressive Caucus.

I spoke in solidarity with these highly skilled workers -- who are striking for fair wages, safe working conditions, job security, affordable health care and reasonable retirement benefits –- because solidarity is our superpower in this era of record corporate power. I urge everyone to use our collective power to support Connecticut's working class fighting for what’s been rightfully earned and continue to grow the economic backbone of our communities.

Bills Passed

Speaking of treating workers with dignity, House Democrats took action on Wednesday in passing legislation that limits when warehouse employers use production quotas.

The legislation also ensures that:

  • Employers must provide quota information upon hiring an employee
  • If quotas change, workers must be notified
  • Employees cannot be retaliated against for requesting work records
  • Quotas cannot be used to inhibit workers from using the restroom or taking an entitled break

Valuing people over profits is always good public policy.

House Democrats also voted Wednesday to make important changes to the Firefighters Cancer Relief Program, including among other things expanding the types of cancers covered to include skin cancer and authorizing workers’ compensation administrative law judges to handle appeals of any denial of benefits.

Women-Owned Business Day

On  Tuesday I took part in the Women's Business Development Council's 11th annual Women-Owned Business Day to celebrate women-owned and led small businesses in Connecticut. To get an idea of the impact of what the organization does not just for Connecticut, but for the 135th District, please see the flyer below.

Nearly 20 grants totaling close to $250,000 have gone to 15 businesses over the past five years. Statewide, just over 1,600 grants have been awarded, with more than 11,500 clients served.

Troop 66 Court of Honor/100th Anniversary

It's always a thrill to attend a Court of Honor celebrating the newest Eagle Scouts, the highest rank in scouting. It's was an even bigger thrill last weekend to attend Troop 66's 100th anniversary celebration at Jesse Lee Church in Easton.

Congratulations to Troop 66 on its proud legacy of 100 years of scouting experiences living out the Scout code and promise, and thank you.

Kickball Game

Join me on May 12 at Dunkin' Park for the annual Democrats v. Republicans CGA Kickball Classic. It's great fun for a great cause. And, yes, I will be playing!

Tickets are $10, with proceeds going to Connecticut Foodshare.
