Rep. Matt Lesser presented the General Assembly’s Black and Puerto Rican Caucus’ (BPRC) scholarship to the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Committee of Greater Middletown.

“I am proud to work with the BPRC to promote racial understanding and equal opportunity in Middletown,” Lesser said. “The work of the MLK Scholarship Committee is important and inspiring.”

In a ceremony Wednesday at the State Capitol, Lesser presented the scholarship to MLK Committee President Brittany Hoggard. “On behalf of the MLK Committee, we greatly appreciate Representative Lesser’s donation and the support he has given to the lives of our youth and their future. The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow,” Hoggard said.

The BPRC’s scholarship is named after Wilfred X. “Spike” Johnson, who was elected to Connecticut's General Assembly in 1958, making him the first African American to hold that office. The scholarship was created to help college-bound Black and Latino high school seniors and current college students.
