NY Times Editorial Denounces DeVos Policy Exempting Student Loan Service Companies

As the House chair of the Banking Committee, Lesser in 2015 authored the nation’s first state regulations for student loan servicing companies. Since then, legislation similar to Connecticut’s Student Bill of Rights has been introduced or passed in dozens of states across the country.

“Fortunately, state regulators have made clear that they will continue to prosecute servicers that violate state law — and will challenge the federal government in court if it tries to interfere," according to the New York Times editorial. “Meanwhile, the dangerous pre-emption legislation pending in Congress deserves to die a swift death.”
