House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz (D–Southington/Berlin) and State Representative David Zoni (D–Southington) hosted Jenny Magnoli, a student from Southington, at the State Capitol in Hartford. Magnoli was presented with a citation for her accomplishment of winning the 2015 Connecticut Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) "Voice of Democracy" essay contest.

Each year, nearly 38,000 high school students from across the country enter to win a share of the $2.2 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the VFW's Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition.

As Connecticut's first-place winner, Magnoli received a $1,000 scholarship and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

The VFW established the Voice of Democracy program in 1947 to provide students grades 9-12 the opportunity to express themselves in regards to democratic ideas and principles.
