FEMA Public Assistance
The FEMA Public Assistance (PA) Program provides federal support and assistance to governments and private non-profit organizations following a federally declared disaster. The state distributes federal pass-through funding to the affected local and tribal governments to quickly respond to and recover from a major disaster situation. This funding may also be used for costs incurred by the state and its agencies resulting from a major disaster.
After a disaster the Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS) forms a declaration working group to determine if thresholds have been met to apply for federal disaster assistance. DEMHS reaches out to federal, state, regional and local partners to collect initial damage estimates to make this decision.
Public Assistance is a reimbursement program that reimburses state, local and tribal governments for eligible disaster related costs. These costs include the following:
• Eligible Debris Removal Costs
• Emergency Protective Measures
• Repair and replacement of public owned facilities destroyed or damaged by a disaster
FEMA Individual Assistance
If a federal Major Disaster is declared by the President, dependent on the severity of damage, FEMA's Individual Assistance and its related programs may be made available to the affected areas. Should IA be made available, you will be notified through multiple media; It is important to stay informed during a disaster situation to know if resources are available to you.
FEMA’s Individual Assistance (IA) program includes a number of programs geared toward providing assistance to individuals impacted by a disaster.
Individual Assistance: Individuals and Households Program (IHP) The Individuals and Household program is broken down into two grant programs: Housing Assistance (HA) and Other Needs Assistance (ONA).
• Housing Assistance offers funds for temporary housing (rental assistance while a survivor is displaced from his/her home) and home repair.
• Other Needs Assistance offers funds for some essential needs, such as disaster-related funeral expenses, necessary medical equipment, limited personal property such as furniture, appliances and transportation.
Most categories of Other Needs Assistance are dependent on survivors completing a Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster loan application. This application is automatically sent to a survivor after completing the FEMA registration process.
A message from SoundWaters Kayaks regarding Ida clean up:
Hurricane Ida left us with a mess to clean up. You're invited to join SoundWaters this Saturday, September 11, in an effort to clean up Stamford Harbor. Ida caused significant runoff of debris into the harbor and once in the water, the only way to clear debris is from the water, in this case, from SoundWaters kayaks.
We'll let you use a kayak for FREE if you help us pick up trash. Single and double kayaks will be equipped with a net or trash picker and a bucket so paddlers can safely remove whatever trash they find.
Saturday’s clean-up will be the culmination of a summer-long partnership between SoundWaters and Stamford-based non-profit, Building One Community, to provide recent immigrants access to Long Island Sound and to engage immigrant families in environmental advocacy.
Registration is FREE, but spots are limited. All participants must be at 18 years of age or accompanied by an adult. Advance registration is required. Learn more and Register |
