My Support for a Series of Public Health Bills

March 16, 2023

As you may know, I worked in the medical field for about 40 years before joining the Connecticut House of Representatives. Taking care of patients has been my life's work and an amazing journey. My experience has lead me to serve on the Public Health Committee, which is an honor.

We have debated a series of bills that has caught the eye of the general public. One is Senate Bill 1076, which concerns aid in dying. The bill would allow patients, who are terminally ill, to self-administer medication until their death. I have extensive experience with hospice care and penned a letter to the editor of "Good Morning Wilton" to express my support of the bill. CLICK HERE to read my OP-ED.

I support two other important bills addressing public health in this legislative session. Senate Bill 171 would increase access to birth control medication. Under the proposal, pharmacists would have the right to prescribe those drugs. Under current law, a doctor must be the one to do so. I believe this bill would give patients more freedom when it comes to their reproductive rights.

I also voted for House Bill 6821 which concerns cytomegalovirus, a virus that if contracted by a pregnant mother can be passed on to her child. This bill would require the Department of Health to post educational information on its website for health care providers and the public. This proposal would raise awareness of the virus and the ways it can be dealt with.

If you would like to speak with me about any of these bills or anything else happening at the Capitol, please do not hesitate to contact me at Keith.Denning@cga.ct.gov or 1-800-240-8585.
