Red Light Cameras Coming to Waterbury

June 29, 2023

On Monday, Governor Ned Lamont signed the Vision Zero bill into law paving the way for red light cameras in Waterbury. The move is designed to increase public safety by penalizing drivers who go through red lights on our city streets. It is no secret that we have seen a spike in reckless driving and road fatalities in Waterbury and the rest of the state. Crews are installing the red light cameras at the city’s most dangerous intersections.

A driver, who is caught going through a red light, will get a warning after the first offense starting on October 1. Then it’s a $50 fine, and each violation afterward is $75. This is a three-year program, and the state can pull the plug on the project if it finds the red light cameras are not beneficial to our community.

My colleagues and I on the Board of Aldermen still need to create an ordinance that follows the rules outlined in the state bill, ensuring the red light cameras are marked with signs. We are also working on creating an appeals process for drivers who receive the fines.
