AARP Honors Serra For Helping Caregivers For Older Adults

February 10, 2016

Representative Joseph Serra (D-Middletown) has received the 2015 AARP Legislative Achievement Award in recognition of his leadership in helping family caregivers who provide their loved ones with nearly 427 million hours of uncompensated care each year.

If caregivers had been compensated, it would have cost $13.97 an hour, or $5.9 billion a year, in Connecticut, AARP officials said.

“Thanks to your leadership, family caregivers will have increased training and support when their loved one enters and transitions home from a hospital,” AARP officials said in an announcement honoring Serra.

“I am deeply honored to receive this award from AARP and to have my work in the legislature recognized by such an important and influential organization,” Serra said. “We need to continue to do everything we can to help our older residents maintain a quality of life in retirement that they so richly deserve.”
