Biography

Michael Winkler was elected State Representative to serve the 56th Assembly District in Vernon.

For fourteen years prior to his retirement, Michael was President or First Vice President of the Administrative and Residual Employees Bargaining Unit, AFT Local 4200, representing 3,000 state employees that included accountants, planners, analysts, attorneys, revenue examiners and others.

Michael worked at the Connecticut Department of Social Services from 1977 to 1999.

He attended the University of Connecticut where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science in 1972 and a Master’s Degree in Political Science in 1991.

Active in his community, Michael served on Vernon’s Town Council for 13 years. He served on the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Health and Human Services Committee. He coached youth sports and is a member of Vernon’s CERT (Community Emergency Response Team).

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Michael was raised in Norwich, CT. He and his wife Phyllis have lived in Vernon for forty years. They have two daughters.
