Biography

Linda A. Orange was elected to the Legislature in November 1996 to represent the 48th Assembly District, which includes the portions of Colchester, Lebanon, Windham and Mansfield. Linda is a Deputy Speaker of the House.

As Deputy Speaker, when the Speaker of the House is absent from the chamber, Linda presides over the House of Representatives, recognizes all members wishing to speak to the chamber, puts all questions to vote and directs legislation to the proper committees. Linda additionally serves as Vice Chair of the Public Safety Committee and is also on the General Law Committee and the Joint Committee on Legislative Management.

Born in Hartford, Linda grew up in Marlborough. She has lived in Colchester for 32 years.

Linda was trained in respiratory therapy in a program at Hartford Hospital. She worked for the General Assembly as a legislative assistant from 1991-95, and was appointed clerk of the Public Health Committee in the 1993 legislative session.

Committed to public service, Linda served as a member and chairman of the Colchester Board of Assessment Appeals from 1992-95. She served on the Colchester Police Commission from 1993-96. She has been a member of the Colchester Democratic Town Committee since 1989. Rep. Orange is also a member of the Colchester Democratic Women’s Club, a member of the East Haddam Historical Society, an associate member of the Connecticut National Guard, and a member of the Backus Hospital Board of Corporators. She is also a Justice of the Peace.

Linda has received numerous awards and distinctions over the course of her legislative career including awards from the Connecticut Recreation and Parks Association, the Connecticut Academy of Physician Assistants, the Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen, UConn Advocates, the Middlesex County Medical Association, the New London County Medical Association, and the Connecticut State Society of Anesthesiologists. She has also been named to the Advisory Council of the Women’s Legislative Network of the National Conference of State Legislatures.

For her dedication to public safety and first responders, Linda has been recognized by KX Communications, the Connecticut State Firefighters Association, the Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters Association of Connecticut, the Connecticut Council of Police Unions, the Connecticut Coalition of Police and Corrections Officers, the Eastern Connecticut EMS Council, the National Guard Association, the Criminal Investigation and Prevention Association, and the Department of Public Safety.

Linda is an honorary member of Colchester Hayward Volunteer Fire Department and a Major in the Civil Air Patrol, Legislative Wing.
