Health Insurance Rate Increase Request

July 20, 2018

Representative Sean Scanlon, House chairman of the Insurance and Real Estate committee, released the following statement in response to the release of the health insurance rate requests for 2019:

“The rate request increases announced today are not surprising given the increasing cost of delivering health care and the amount of instability and uncertainty right now in the insurance marketplace.

“At a time when we should be working together to lower the cost of insurance and health care, President Trump’s recent decisions to end the individual mandate, end cost sharing reduction payments and suspend risk adjustment payments are all having the opposite effect of actually increasing premiums.

“Regardless of who is to blame, the people of Connecticut simply can’t afford to continually have the price of their insurance to go up. I hope Commissioner Wade will take that into consideration when considering these rate requests and I look forward to working with our next governor and my colleagues in the legislature to continue finding ways to lower the cost of health care for the citizens of this state – independent of what is happening in Washington.”
