Updates from State Rep. Gary Turco for July 31, 2026

July 31, 2026

Many of us have signed up for a free trial or subscription that turned into a frustrating experience when it came time to cancel. Companies made it easy to sign up, but far too difficult to get out.

Four years ago, I proposed and helped pass Connecticut’s first “Click to Cancel” law with bipartisan support to protect consumers from these unfair subscription practices. This year, as Vice Chair of the General Law Committee, I was proud to help strengthen those protections even further.

The updated law helps ensure that if it’s easy to sign up for a subscription, it should be just as easy to cancel it. It also requires businesses to provide clear renewal terms, send annual reminders for automatic renewals, and offer simple ways to cancel without unnecessary hurdles or delays.

These are commonsense consumer protections that put Connecticut residents back in control of their money and help prevent unwanted recurring charges. I’m proud to continue working on practical, bipartisan solutions that make a real difference for consumers across our state.

Summertime in Newington

Last Saturday was filled with connecting with residents across Newington on a beautiful summer day.

The day started by joining Mayor Jon Trister, Deputy Mayor Kim Radda, and Town Councilors Hilda Nieves and Matt Plourd at the Lucy Robbins Welles Library for a community forum with residents. From there, I stopped by the annual Robbins Avenue lemonade stand, where local kids were raising money for Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. It was also great to see the Newington Police Department there showing their support for such a wonderful cause.

Heather and I grabbed a quick lobster roll at Stew Leonard’s before stopping to visit a Newington resident at an assisted living community. It was wonderful spending some time catching up and hearing about what has been going on in their life.

From there, I headed over to the Enoch Kelsey House open house hosted by the Newington Historical Society, where it was great to see Board of Education Vice Chair Jessica Weaver as well. I wrapped up the day by going door to door, listening to residents’ concerns and reminding voters about the upcoming primary election.

My favorite part of the day was talking with so many residents and hearing about their summer adventures, family vacations, and the memories they’ve been making.

Those conversations are always the best part of serving this community. Thank you to everyone who took the time to say hello!

I also recently stopped by Eddy Farm, which is officially open for the summer and fall season. Be sure to stop by and support this wonderful local family business for fresh produce and other seasonal favorites.

Red Cross Needs Blood Donors

The American Red Cross needs our help — there is an emergency blood shortage, which means the blood supply is critically low - about a one to two day supply on hand — and could cause hospitals to triage blood products, prioritizing the most critical cases, delaying non-emergency procedures, and causing risks for patients who require timely transfusions, including trauma patients, women giving birth, and patients with chronic blood disorders.

Blood donors, especially those with types O+ & B- blood (the biggest shortages right now), and platelet donors are urgently needed to help ensure lifesaving medical care isn't delayed for patients.

Basic eligibility for whole blood donation:

  • Donation frequency: Every 56 days, up to 6 times a year
  • You must be in good health and feeling well
  • You must be at least 16 years old in most states
  • You must weigh at least 110 lbs.

Basic eligibility for platelet donation:

  • Donation frequency: Every 7 days, up to 24 times/year
  • You must be in good health and feeling well
  • You must be at least 17 years old in most states
  • You must weigh at least 110 lbs.

There are also options to donate Power Red and plasma (eligibility can be found here - https://www.redcrossblood.org/donate-blood/how-to-donate/eligibility-requirements.html

Find a blood drive near you: https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/find-drive

The need for blood is constant. The supply isn't.
