Biography
Tammy Exum represents the 19th District (West Hartford, Avon) after first being elected during a special election in April 2019. Rep. Exum is Vice Chair of the Appropriations Committee and a member of the Human Services Committee. She also serves in a leadership capacity as a Deputy Majority Leader. During the 2022 legislative session, Rep. Exum helped champion and co-author transformative legislation, HB 5001, An Act Concerning Children’s Mental Health.
As a strong advocate of the disability community, she successfully introduced legislation during the 2021 session to provide workforce and career opportunities for those with disabilities and created the disability workforce pipeline. Rep. Exum prides herself on listening and being responsive to the concerns of everyone from our communities.
After earning her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, Rep. Exum started her career as an elementary school teacher. She moved to West Hartford with her family in 1999 after earning her master’s degree in business administration and being recruited by the Otis Elevator company.
Rep. Exum is the former vice chair of the West Hartford Board of Education. She is a founding member, former president and executive board member of the West Hartford Special Education PTA. Rep. Exum is the former coordinator and facilitator of the Parent Leadership Training Institute. She has also been active on many boards and organizations.
Along with her husband Earl, Rep. Exum is the proud parent of three sons — Evan, Kyle, and Jonathan.
