Over the past several months, I’ve been proud to lead legislation alongside Representative Tammy Nuccio to modernize Connecticut’s fertility coverage laws.
Connecticut has long been a national leader in requiring insurance coverage for fertility treatment, but our current law is outdated. It was written around a narrow definition of infertility that simply doesn’t reflect how families are formed today.
And this isn’t about one group of people, it’s about anyone who dreams of starting a family and runs into barriers along the way.
For some, that means navigating infertility.
For others, it means needing medical assistance from the very beginning.
For many, it means turning to options like donor embryos, donor gametes, or surrogacy.
Our language in House Bill 5374 fixes that.
It updates the definition of infertility so coverage is based on medical need, as determined by a physician, not outdated assumptions.
Because here’s the reality:
People across Connecticut are already paying for this coverage every month but too many can’t actually use it when they need it most.
That’s not right.
This bill is about fairness. It’s about dignity. And it’s about making sure that when someone is ready to build a family, the system doesn’t stand in their way.
This was a true bipartisan effort. Rep. Nuccio and I worked closely with advocates and stakeholders to get this right, and I’m grateful for that partnership.
The bill now awaits action on the House floor and I’ll keep pushing to get it across the finish line. |
