Vernon Superintendent Dr. Macary named CT Superintendent of the Year

December 1, 2023

I'm excited to announce that our Superintendent Dr. Joseph Macary has been named the 2024 Superintendent of the year by the Connecticut Association of Public Schools Superintendents (CAPSS).

The criteria used to select a superintendent of the year included (1) leadership for learning, (2) communication, (3) professionalism, and (4) community involvement. Dr. Macary has exemplified all of these qualities, making this a well deserved award.

Dr. Joseph Macary has dedicated over 15 years to serving as a superintendent in Connecticut, consistently demonstrating exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to educational excellence. He began his journey in education as a Social Studies Teacher in Waterbury Public Schools, where he made a significant impact at Wilby and Crosby High Schools. During his tenure at Crosby High School, Dr. Macary served as the Social Studies Department Chair and Athletic Director, leaving a lasting legacy in the school community.

After embarking on his administrative career, Dr. Macary continued to excel. He held pivotal roles at Wolcott Public Schools, including Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction and Director of Student Services and Alternate Programs. In July 2009, he assumed the role of Superintendent of Schools for the Town of Wolcott, and later, in October 2015, he took on his current position as the Superintendent of Schools for the Town of Vernon, Connecticut. The Vernon Public Schools, an Alliance District, serves 3,500 students across seven schools, including a regional adult education program.

It is an honor to work in his district and to have such a dedicated individual serving our town and children.
