Dear Neighbor,

I was thrilled to hear that earlier this week, $526,600 in grant and matching funds was given to restore Alewife Cove in New London.

The grant comes from the Long Island Sound Futures Fund, which announced 39 grants totaling $12 million to organizations and local governments to improve the health of Long Island Sound.

The grant to Alewife Cove will develop a nature-based plan engaging 500 members of the public at three public education events focused on restoring the cove at the mouth of Long Island Sound and the Thames River. The project will establish a pathway to increase shoreline resilience to storms and restore the important coastal habitat on the shoreline of Long Island Sound.

The restoration of Alewife Cove is a project that residents of New London have been advocating for for months, if not years. I’m so proud that this cove is getting the funding it truly deserves. Not only will New London residents see the immediate benefits of the project, but we will also contribute to the critical environmental goal the Long Island Sound Futures Fund is working toward.
