Special Ed Funding, Help for Veterans, and Housing Conversation

March 3, 2025

Democrats in Connecticut showed our commitment to supporting special education last week by approving $40 million last week in immediate funding for our towns. I'll break down why the timing is so important.

We also passed a measure supporting our veterans in Connecticut. Read below to learn how we're helping those who've already given so much to our country.
I want to express my gratitude to everyone who attended last week's important housing forum. This strong turnout and thoughtful participation highlighted just how deeply this issue affects our communities. Below, I'll share more details from our discussion.

$40 Million for Special Education
This week, the House and Senate approved a bill that allocates $40 million in funding for special education, providing immediate relief to more than 140 school districts across the state. These critical resources will help ensure that all our students receive the specialized services and support they need to thrive.

Here's the approximate financial breakdown in 42nd District under this proposal:

  • $202,000 for Wilton Public Schools
  • $193,000 for Ridgefield Public Schools
  • $163,000 for New Canaan Public Schools

Governor Lamont has expressed concerns regarding this allocation and has suggested the possibility of a line-item veto. I will keep you posted on any developments regarding this. However, my colleagues and I have heard loud and clear from communities across Connecticut -- the rising cost of special education is placing an enormous strain on local budgets, and school districts need relief now as they develop their budgets.

Special education remains a top legislative priority, and we will keep fighting for policies that lower costs, strengthen services, and provide more financial support for our children. Our ultimate goal is to create at sustainable, fully funded system that supports students, families, and educators for years to come.

Veterans’ Property Tax Exemption
We took a significant step in supporting veterans by passing legislation this week that provides much-needed tax relief for those who are 100% permanently and totally disabled due to their military service. This bill recognizes the sacrifices made by these veterans and aims to ease their financial burden by reducing property tax obligations, allowing them to keep more of their hard-earned income for essential needs.
By passing this measure, Connecticut reaffirms its commitment to honoring and supporting those who have given so much for our country, ensuring they receive the assistance and recognition they deserve.

Conversation on Housing in Connecticut
I was honored to speak in front of a large and engaged crowd about Connecticut’s housing laws and our ongoing efforts to tackle the state’s housing challenges. Access to safe, affordable housing is a fundamental issue that affects communities across the state, and meaningful solutions require thoughtful dialogue and collaboration.
I joined Majority Leader Jason Rojas, the Ridgefield Delegation, and Rep. Jonathan Steinberg at a forum in Ridgefield as we outlined our legislative vision, addressed key concerns, and most importantly listened to the diverse perspectives from the public on the best ways to address affordable housing across Connecticut.
Thank you to everyone who attended the forum and shared their insights, concerns, and ideas. Your voices are essential in shaping policy solutions. I would also like to thank Majority Leader Rojas for traveling to Ridgefield and lending his extensive knowledge and experience on housing policy. We will continue working collaboratively with the people of Connecticut in addressing this issue.
