Addressing Flooding on Route 113

After months of collaboration with my state and municipal colleagues, I'm pleased to announce the state is stepping in to help address our intermittent flooding issue on Route 113 in Stratford. The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) signed an Emergency Declaration to hire a contractor, who will attempt to reduce flooding by installing a temporary sandbag coffer dam adjacent to the roadway and multiuse path. This joint effort reflects our commitment to finding local and effective solutions together for the community.

One of the major concerns is that Route 113 floods more regularly because the ground there continues to settle. The CTDOT, the contractor, and other key players will work together to create an environmentally friendly plan to permanently re-establish the elevation of Route 113. Once the CTDOT hires a contractor, it will release a timeline for temporary and permanent work.

It’s important to point out that Route 113 runs through an environmentally sensitive tidal wetland with challenging soil conditions. This area is also adjacent to Sikorsky Airport and an EPA contamination area. Any plans to address flooding will require careful consideration of these environmental factors to minimize disruption and potential harm.
