Legislative Update for Sept. 12, 2025

September 12, 2025

Dear Neighbor,

The killing of Charlie Kirk is a reprehensible act that violates both the sanctity of human life and the principles of democratic society.

No act of violence can ever be justified. Violence is not a legitimate form of expression for any reason, including political.

In a free and diverse democracy, disagreements must be addressed through dialogue, even when viewpoints differ significantly. I hope law enforcement identifies and captures the perpetrator, so that justice can be served.

Beyond the profound personal loss to Mr. Kirk's family and community, such violence tears at the civic fabric that binds us together.

Grand Opening

Mansfield residents are officially in the dog house. Nikki's Dog House, that is. The popular eatery famous for its hot dogs opened a location in Storrs and held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Sept. 6.

State Sen. Mae Flexer and I presented owners Larry and Erica Groh with a citation, while Mansfield Downtown Partnership Executive Director Steven Ferrigno, Mansfield Deputy Mayor Ben Shaiken, were in attendance.

I may have also indulged in an early lunch. (Who can resist?)

New Legislation

The House last session overwhelmingly passed a bill (117 to 27) that guarantees minors ability to independently consent to pregnancy care and contraception. In addition, health care providers are prohibited from sharing information about these services (including sending a bill) with the minor's parents without the minor's consent. This is consistent with the way consent is currently obtained in a number of other types of healthcare including emergency medical treatment, testing for sexually transmitted infections and abortion.

This bill, which was signed into law by Gov. Ned Lamont, protects access prenatal care, among other things, for minors to promote better health outcomes.
