Standing with Our Neighbors After Devastating Fire

July 10, 2026

One of our beloved neighborhoods in the 75th District has been devastated by a huge fire that spread across half a city block, displacing more than a dozen residents. The fire started around 6 p.m. Thursday on South Main Street, and the flames raged onto West Clay Street.

I am beyond grateful to the Waterbury firefighters, police officers, emergency medical personnel, and all of our first responders who jumped into action and responded within two minutes of receiving the 911 call to contain the fire, protect nearby homes, and ensure that everyone escaped safely. Their courage, professionalism, and selfless dedication prevented any loss of life and further damage.

For the three Waterbury firefighters who were hurt while protecting our community, I wish them a full and speedy recovery.

In times like these, Waterbury remains strong and works tirelessly to help those in need. The American Red Cross is on site providing emergency shelter, assistance, and essential resources to those who lost their homes. The Hispanic Coalition of Greater Waterbury is also accepting donations at 135 East Liberty Street to support those affected. If you would like to help, please call (203) 754-6172 or contact me directly at Geraldo.Reyes@cga.ct.gov.

This fire tugs at the heartstrings because my family and I lived in this neighborhood for years, and it holds countless cherished memories. The people who live there are not just constituents; they are my friends, neighbors, and the reason I have dedicated my public service to improving the quality of life, strengthening our community, and supporting local businesses.
Recent visit to La Borinqueña Restaurant

I recently visited La Borinqueña Restaurant as part of a small business tour highlighting the incredible entrepreneurs who help make this neighborhood so special. The restaurant is now closed as investigators work to determine the cause of the fire.

Please keep everyone that has been affected in your thoughts and prayers. The road to recovery will take time, but I know the Waterbury community will stand together and help these families rebuild.

I will continue to monitor the situation and provide any updates as they become available.
