Back-to-School Sales Tax-Free Week

August 12, 2026

The annual sales tax holiday exempts most clothing and footwear under $300 from the 6.35% Connecticut sales tax. This is an increase from the previous $100 exemption, and there is no limit to the number of items that can be purchased as long as each item individually costs less than $300.

In addition, this year the legislature fully eliminated the sales tax on most school supplies such as pens, pencils, notebooks, folders, binders, lunch boxes etc. This took effect July 1, and applies all year round, except for electronics.

We encourage all residents to take advantage of the extra savings as you get the kids ready to go back to school. It's also a great way to show some extra support your local small businesses.

Here's more information on Sales Tax-Free Week, including specific items that are tax-exempt and those specialty items that are not. Backpacks and cleats have been added to the tax-exempt list this year.

The first state sales tax free week was implemented back in 2000.
