Updates from Rep. Chris Poulos for March 13

March 13, 2026

Over the last few weeks, the legislature’s Public Safety & Security Committee has held several public hearings on proposals aimed at strengthening everyone's safety across Connecticut.

Bills discussed include efforts to improve cybersecurity protections, support law enforcement training, expand firefighter cancer screening programs, and strengthen statewide fire protection coordination.

Other proposals address community safety issues such as school mapping for emergency responders and safety requirements for certain infrastructure and public spaces.

Public hearings allow residents and public safety professionals to share their perspectives before the committee determines which proposals will move forward. I remain committed to supporting our police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and all first responders who work every day to keep our communities safe.

Please continue reading below for other noteworthy items, and thanks as always for taking the time to read them!

Elevating Educators’ Voices

Between hearings and committee meetings at the Legislative Office Building, I attended the Connecticut Education Association (CEA) Retired Lobby Day. It was great to connect with Southington retired educators Bob Brown, Dan Hart, and Susan Hart and hear their legislative priorities.

As a teacher and legislator, I know the best education policy starts with listening — these conversations ensure decisions reflect real classroom experience and support students and schools. I’m grateful for their engagement and look forward to continuing to amplify retired educators’ voices in Hartford.

Legislative Update from AARP

Earlier this week, I enjoyed catching up with my Southington AARP friends, Laura Schiavone, Janet Ferracci, and Lottie Prushinski. Over coffee at the Lions Den, they shared their feedback on the past legislative session as well as their updated priorities for the year. I look forward to continuing our collaboration in the months ahead as we advocate on behalf of Connecticut’s seniors and retirees.

Helping Local Families

If you're able, please consider helping donating food to Southington Community Services to help families in the community.

You can drop off donations at their facility at 91 Norton Street in Plantsville, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You will find a list of most-needed food items below.

If you prefer to give financially, you can also make a donation using one of the options below.

Every contribution helps ensure that families in our community have access to the food and support they need. Thank you for your generosity.

Rest Area Improvements

The state will begin work to repave the Southington rest area on I-84 East on April 1. In addition to installing new drainage, lighting, and rest area fixtures, crews will also build three stormwater ponds for better drainage.

Depending on the timing, some parking spaces or entire parking lots will be closed during the work. Thankfully, there will not be any lane closures on I-84 during the work, which is expected to wrap up by November 30, 2027.
