Dear Neighbor,

Today, we will see people from all walks of life posting about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., sharing quotes photos, and portions of his speeches.

And the truth is, as wonderful it is to celebrate his life and legacy today, it’s what we do the other 364 days of the year to combat poverty, to work toward equity, and to dismantle racist systems that matter.

Instead of a quote, I’ll share one of my favorite works by Dr. King and hope you’ll consider it for your reading list. It represents his final manuscript, written in 1967 and in which he advocates for “better jobs, higher wages, decent housing, and quality education.” It’s sweeping and beautiful and visionary.

I hope today, however, you are choosing to celebrate, that you remain thoughtful and committed to the causes he cared about that were well beyond the simplicity of how he is remembered at large.

Sincerely,

Eleni Kavros DeGraw
State Representative
