Legislative & Local Updates for the 149th District

April 18, 2024

Dear Neighbor,

In early February, both Eversource and United Illuminating filed a request to increase their rates. Yesterday, those rates were approved by the Public Utility Regulation Agency (PURA) (read more HERE). For Eversource customers that would represent a 19% increase.

I’ve been troubled by the steep rise in energy costs in recent years. In fact, Connecticut ratepayers pay among the highest utility rates in the continental United States. I’ve had many conversations with constituents who are struggling to pay the ongoing rate hikes. I recently contacted the Commissioner of our Public Utilities Regulatory Agency (PURA) to urge her to say no to this rate hike. You can view the letter here.

If you’re having difficulty understanding your bill or need assistance paying it, here are some helpful resources:

Honoring Women-Owned Business Day at the Capitol

I was pleased to attend the Women’s Business Development Council (WBDC) Women-Owned Business Day at the Capitol on April 11 to celebrate the economic strength of women-owned businesses. Women-owned businesses are critical to the state’s economy but also to the economic vitality of communities and in building generational wealth.

In the past 20 years, CT-based women-owned businesses have grown by 56%, and our businesses now contribute more than $16 billion a year to our gross state product! Right here in the 149th District, the WBDC serves 73 clients and has distributed about $41,000 in funds since 2020. These grants are critical to providing small businesses with the capital they need to grow.

Spending Time With Our Firefighters
It's always nice to catch up with the Stamford Professional Firefighters in Hartford. I am so grateful for the work of our firefighters to keep us, our families, and our property safe.

Firefighters are:

  • 202 times more likely to get testicular cancer;
  • 153 times more likely to get multiple myeloma;
  • 151 times more likely to get non-hodgkins lymphoma;
  • 139 times more likely to get skin cancer;
  • 131 times more likely to get breast cancer;

I was proud to advocate for funding for the firefighters.

This Week's Session
It's always nice to see neighbors from Greenwich in Hartford!
