There is Still One Day Left for Early Voting

March 28, 2024

Dear Neighbor,

There is still one day left to vote early in the Presidential Primary. It’s this Saturday, March 30. Check here to learn where your polling place is. And if you choose to vote on Election Day, the date is Tuesday, April 2.

Last week, I highlighted some bills that I was proud to co-sponsor. Here are a few more:

  • Protect libraries from exorbitant fees for e-book licenses. Right now, in Connecticut, libraries can only loan an electronic book 26 times or for two years, whichever comes first, then libraries have to pay all over again for a license. HB 5312 and SB 148, which are backed by Connecticut’s librarians, would prohibit libraries from entering into onerous contracts with publishers, saving money for libraries and taxpayers alike. For more information on this topic, please read this article by my colleagues Representatives Blumenthal and Kavros DeGraw.
  • Rid our groundwater of toxic chemicals. SB 292 would further restrict PFAS, so-called “forever chemicals” that are prevalent in consumer products, leach into groundwater, and pose significant risks to our health. Last September PFAS contamination was found in the water supply to Parkway School, leaving students and staff reliant on bottled water.
  • Raise the child support age to 21 from the current 18. The reality is that when children of divorced parents go to college, often the custodial parent, usually the mother, has to still maintain a home for them, pay for their clothing, cell phone, and food when they are home from college - all without legally required financial child support. This is a major financial burden for divorced women and with HB 5420, the change in the law would better reflect the age when children can be financially independent.
  • Help our seniors age in place safely and affordably. HB 5001 covers a number of issues impacting seniors including: requiring additional training of home care workers; creating a more efficient process for accessing Medicaid; and expanding the Office of Long-Term Care Ombudsman. This is a priority of the House, and I am thrilled it is progressing through the legislative process. Click here to read an article that explores additional details of the bill.

Advocating for School Meals

I was proud to advocate for funding for school meals. There is food insecurity in all communities and we need to remove the stigma for children who need meal assistance.

Donate to the 2024 Campership Fund

The Greenwich Department of Human Services Fund provides camp scholarships for Greenwich children. This year, the Fund is facing a shortfall in funding, which means 60 children miss out on summer camp unless we act now! Your donation, big or small, helps ensure these children experience the joys of camp!
