Schools To Remain Closed Through May 20

Due to an executive order signed by Governor Lamont, schools will remain closed through May 20 as a continuing result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools can provide a vector for significant disease spread.

Relief Reminder

As we continue to practice social distancing during Governor Lamont's Stay Home, Stay Safe order, you may notice your cars sitting unused in the driveway. If you find that you have been driving less, your insurance company may owe you money. The Connecticut Insurance Department is now calling on auto insurance companies to issue partial refunds on premiums. Insurer Allstate has already agreed to return more than $600 million to customers nationwide.

In a Department Notice released last week, all insurance companies offering auto and motorcycle liability insurance coverage in Connecticut are requested to adjust premiums to reflect the reduced risk from fewer vehicles being driven on the road during the shelter-in-place period. The agency is also encouraging insurers to assist business owners, and restaurants in particular by affording them coverage for those delivery drivers who request commercial hired and non-owned automobile insurance and to use online, "gig” delivery businesses.

For more information, read the press release issued last week by the Insurance Department.

Multi-State Council

Recognizing that their states have one integrated regional economy, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf, and Delaware Governor John Carney yesterday announced the creation of a multi-state council to restore the economy and get people back to work. This announcement builds on the states’ ongoing regional approach to combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

The coordinating group – comprised of one health expert, one economic development expert and the respective chief of staff from each state – will work together to develop a fully integrated regional framework to gradually lift the states’ stay at home orders while minimizing the risk of increased spread of the virus.

The council will create this framework using every tool available to accomplish the goal of easing social isolation without triggering renewed spread – including testing, contact tracing, treatment and social distancing – and will rely on the best available scientific, statistical, social and economic information to manage and evaluate those tools.

During times of crisis like this, it is more important than ever to share stories of hope and inspiration. I am launching an effort with my colleagues in the House of Representatives to honor our friends and neighbors who are going above and beyond.

Do you know a first responder? A health care worker? Grocery clerk? Great neighbor? Nominate them for recognition! I will feature these community heroes in my e-newsletters and Facebook page. And we are launching a new website to recognize everyone.

Please send me your nominee’s name, picture, street address, email or phone, and two sentences as to how they have made our community stronger during the pandemic. Together, lets thank them for being them.
