Government Shutdown Resources, and more
October 24, 2025As the federal government shutdown continues, many Connecticut residents are facing uncertainty. United Way of Connecticut’s 211 has published a new resource to help. Click here to take a look at the resource that outlines the current status of federal programs and provides direct links to state and community resources for those affected.
211 is not directly impacted by the federal government shutdown and continues to operate 24/7/365. It’s never been more important to connect residents with trained contact specialists who provide personalized, confidential assistance for basic needs. In many cases, a single call results in multiple new referrals and supports, drawn from their up-to-date database of more than 40,000 community resources.
Free Oral Health Services for Vets, and more
October 17, 2025This week, the Appropriations Committee held a question and answer session on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Benefits and how it has been affected by HR 1, the major legislative bill passed by the United States Congress that slashes benefits for critical programs.
I asked some important questions about our community, including how many people are being impacted by the cuts in food programs, and the possibility of Foodshare movile trucks. I look forward to getting answers and more data, and I will follow up when I do.
Veteran Resources, Breast Cancer Awareness, and more
October 13, 2025After the powerful event held recently on Military Suicide Awareness and Remembrance Day, I want to provide you with some critical veteran and military suicide prevention resources.
First off is the Veterans Crisis Line. This is a 24/7 phone line that can provide immediate help to those having suicidal thoughts. By dialing 988 and then pressing 1, you will be connected with a qualified responder who will listen, help you, and provide you with resources in the future. You can also chat online or text 838255.
In Connecticut, you can connect with a health care suicide prevention coordinator who can get you the help you need.
It is also important to know the location of your nearest VA medical center. No matter your discharge status or if you are enrolled in VA health care, these locations are here to help. Click here to find your nearest medical center.
Finally, please talk to your loved ones and people you trust. No matter what, you are not alone, and there will always be people who want to help.
Honoring Military Suicide Awareness, and more
October 3, 2025This week, Connecticut took a powerful step forward in recognizing Military Suicide Awareness and Remembrance Day.
This effort is rooted in the legacy of Command Sergeant Major Gary Sirois, a decorated veteran and Plainville native whose life and service continue to inspire action. This event was deeply personal and community-driven—from the moment Sandy reached out to me, I knew we had to act.
As a behavioral health nurse, I’ve spent years walking alongside patients who carry the invisible wounds, including veterans battling PTSD, depression, and the lingering effects of trauma. Recognizing this day will help patients feel seen, open doors to conversations that were once shut, and remind every veteran that healing is not weakness - it’s courage.
New Laws, Health Collaborative, and more
September 26, 2025With fall comes cooler weather, changing leaves, and a number of new laws hitting the books. Several measures passed during the 2025 legislative session will take effect on Wednesday, October 1. Click here for a brief overview of some of these important changes!
Potential Access Health Changes, and more
September 19, 2025If you're insured through the Access Health CT exchange, you may have recently received a postcard in the mail—and it's worth paying attention to.
People who receive tax credits or subsidies for their affordable health care plans could see those benefits change or even disappear. This small piece of mail could be alerting you to major changes coming to your health insurance costs.
It’s important to review your current plan now because what you’re paying this year might not be the same next year.
Remembering 9/11, and more
September 5, 2025Next Thursday, we remember the 2,996 lives lost on September 11, 2001, the thousands who have died since due to exposure to toxic chemicals, and the countless lives that were forever changed. May we never forget the people whose lives were stolen from us through this act of terror, and all of the first responders, construction crews, service members, and everyday citizens who saved lives and helped our country rebuild.
Though we move further away from that fateful day each year, we must continue to honor those Americans we lost and never stop the fight against terror and for peace.
Labor Day, and more
August 29, 2025Labor Day is upon us, and it is a time to reflect on the contributions of workers across every industry. Their dedication, resilience, and continued fight for fair wages, safe working conditions, and dignity on the job have shaped our nation and continue to move us forward.
As we celebrate the American labor movement, we honor the hardworking people who have built and strengthened this country.
While we enjoy this well-earned day of rest, let’s also recommit ourselves to advancing policies that uplift working families and ensure every worker is treated with the respect they deserve.
Wishing you and your loved ones a safe, meaningful, and restful Labor Day.
