Dear Neighbor,

Happy Friday!

Tuesday's Medicaid rally at the Capitol was part of a nationwide day of action by members of Congress that brought together state and federal leaders, healthcare workers, advocates, and Medicaid recipients.  The rally aimed to warn of the consequences should Congress approve drastic reductions to Medicaid funding.

Medicaid serves hundreds of thousands of the most vulnerable people in our state, including children on the Husky program, people with disabilities, and seniors.

As you can see in the graphics below, there are many Farmington, Plainville, and Southington residents that will be directly affected by these federal funding cuts. Unfortunately our students are set to lose the most.
  • Farmington, Plainville, and Southington Town Schools receive $16.8 million in federal funding
  • 16,830 residents receive healthcare through Medicaid
  • 6,238 residents benefit from SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)

In the rest of this week's eblast, you can read about an update on the manufactured homes bill, progress on our state budget, and more. You can click on the links below to navigate between sections.

Making Progress on Our State Budget

I'm happy to report that the legislature's Appropriations Committee is making good progress on drafting our next state budget! This week, the Public Health and Human Services Subcommittees, both of which I am a part of, completed the work on our section of the budget. Our work is not finalized and will still have to go through negotiations before it becomes law, but it is a great step forward for the budget process.

Manufactured Homes Bill Advances

Thank you to all those who submitted written testimony or testified at the General Law Committee's public hearing on the manufactured homes bill - the public hearing was well attended and we had 170 letters of written testimony! I'm thrilled to say that the bill passed in the committee today, meaning the entire legislature will be voting on it soon. We are one step closer to this great bill becoming law!

Recruting and Retaining Healthcare Workers

We also had a Public Health Committee meeting today where we advanced some critical bills to the full legislature, including Senate Bill 1450, An Act Concerning Recruitment and Retention of the Health Care Workforce.

It has been well established that our health care system is severely understaffed, and this bill will help us get back on track and provide proper care for our residents while also treating our healthcare workers with the dignity and respect they deserve.

Information Session on the Dangers of Vaping

A reminder that Parentsagainstvaping.org will be hosting a Information Session for parents regarding the dangers of vaping!

The event will take place Tuesday, March 25 at 6pm on ZOOM.

You can register for the event here.
