Here in Connecticut, where the ideals of liberty and self-government took root, we are reminded that our history is not just something we inherit, it's something we continue to shape together.

While our challenges may change, our commitment to democracy, opportunity, and community endures.

This milestone is a chance to reflect on how far we've come, recognize the contributions of every generation, and renew our shared responsibility to build a brighter future.

May this celebration inspire hope, unity, and a renewed belief that by working together, we can ensure the next 250 years reflect the very best of America.

Hot Weather Protocol in Effect

The state has activated the Extreme Hot Weather Protocol due to a heat wave that is expected to last through the weekend. The protocol is in effect from now through at least 6 p.m. on Sunday.

State agencies, municipalities, and other partners are coordinating with United Way 2-1-1 to ensure that information regarding cooling centers is available statewide. Anyone in need of a place to get out of the heat can find their nearest cooling center at www.211ct.org or by calling 2-1-1.

Letter to the Editor

We often begin by explaining why something can't be done, rather than asking how it can be done. That's the challenge we face with housing in Connecticut.

We have the tools. We have the plans. The question is whether we have the will to use them.

Letter to HUD

As a proud member of the Connecticut End Homelessness Caucus, I joined fellow legislators in opposing a proposed federal rule that would roll back protections ensuring equal access to HUD-funded housing and shelters. The proposal would allow federally funded shelters to deny services based on gender identity, creating new barriers for transgender and nonbinary individuals experiencing homelessness.

Connecticut has worked hard to strengthen fair housing protections and reduce homelessness. This proposal moves us in the wrong direction by undermining our state's nondiscrimination laws, placing additional burdens on shelter providers, and increasing the risk that vulnerable people will be left without safe shelter.

Our focus should be on expanding affordable housing, supporting emergency shelters, and helping people transition into permanent housing — not creating new obstacles. We urged HUD to withdraw the proposed rule and preserve equal access to housing for everyone.

Funding for Camp Nett

$5 million secured for a new medical readiness and soldier support center at Camp Nett in Niantic.

I had the opportunity to tour the National Guard base and see firsthand the need for this facility. Our service members deserve modern, functional spaces that support their health and readiness.

This investment will make a real difference for those who serve.

I-95 Exit 74 Closure

The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced that the Exit 74 southbound off-ramp will be closed for two weeks beginning July 13. It is anticipated that the ramp will reopen on July 27. This closure is necessary to facilitate the construction of the new permanent Exit 74 Southbound off-ramp as well as the removal of the current temporary off-ramp.

New Laws Take Effect July 1

Over 80 new Connecticut laws take effect July 1, here are some of the changes you can expect to see around our state!

Food Assistance

Connecticut is allocating $8.5 million from its Federal Cuts Response Fund to provide $300 grocery assistance cards to roughly 25,000 residents who are expected to lose their SNAP benefits due to federal rule changes enacted by the Trump administration and Congressional Republicans. This investment aims to protect vulnerable families and ensure they can continue putting food on the table in lieu of these federal cutbacks.

Ayden Orozco — Eagle Scout.

As an Eagle Scout myself, it's always special to be at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor. And it was my pleasure to be at Ayden’s. His Eagle Scout project was building a dead hedge natural fenceline at Brookside Farm Museum.

He lived the Scout Law to get here. Congratulations, Ayden.

Last week, I had the honor of presenting a citation to the Pattagansett Women's Club for their 100th anniversary!

These women were trailblazers, establishing the club 15 years before the Giants Neck Beach Association was even incorporated. A century of community, connection, and showing up.

Thank you for everything you've given to our region. Congratulations!

Congratulations to the East Lyme High School class of 2026!

Congratulations to the East Lyme Middle School 8th graders on their graduation! It was a beautiful evening for students and families to come together and celebrate all that these young people have accomplished. Wishing them all the best as they head into high school — we're proud of you!

I recently had the honor of presenting a citation to Coach Judy Deeb for her 700th softball victory.

Her commitment to this town has stretched across generations of students and athletes. 56 years as a coach and educator, across multiple sports. A truly remarkable milestone.
