Celebrating the Food Allergy Awareness at Restaurants Law

April 19, 2024

This week, we celebrated the early successes of a new law improving communication between customers and restaurants when it comes to food allergies. Please keep scrolling to learn how this law is making our state a safer place especially for those who suffer from food allergies.

Students are coming to the Capitol next week to meet with legislators for Youth Advocacy Day. I'll explain how this event gives students an amazing opportunity to have their voices heard!

Food Allergy Awareness at Restaurants Law

Advocates, students, restaurant owners, and pediatricians came together to celebrate the early successes of a new law requiring restaurants and other eateries to be more conscious of food allergies. Thanks to Public Act 23-115, those businesses must display posters in their kitchen for staff identifying the most common allergens, the actions staff should take upon notification, ways to prevent cross contamination, and what to do should a reaction occur.

We recognized the work everyone put together including my constituent, Sanskriti Kumar, to help raise awareness and support for this new law. Sanskriti reached out a few years ago about this issue after she developed anxiety and fear of eating out at restaurants because of her food allergies. Since then, she has worked with dedicated advocates, my colleague Rep. Robin Comey, and me to execute our shared vision in this new law.

There is no cure for food allergies, but this law makes Connecticut a safer place to live for anyone suffering from that condition.

It can take years to pass new laws, but our tireless advocacy lead to the passage of this legislation.

Stop by the Capitol for Youth Advocacy Day!
Please join Sunrise Connecticut and me at the Capitol in Hartford on Monday, April 22 at 9 A.M. for Youth Advocacy Day! We will host educational workshops, trainings, and group discussions in Room 2D in the Legislative Office Building.
High school and college students are welcome to engage directly in the legislative process and share their voices, especially when it comes to the climate crisis and environmental justice. Students will have the opportunity to speak directly with legislators, including the chair of the Climate Caucus, and policy makers about the issues that are most important to them.

An Evening of Poetry & Jazz at Ferguson Library
Please stop by Ferguson Library for an evening of smooth jazz and the spoken word with jazz vocalist Richard "Cookie" Thomas and featured poet, Anita Young. The event will take place Friday, April 26 from 6:30 P.M. - 8:30 P.M. at the South End Branch
