New I-84 Signs & Exit Numbers Coming

May 7, 2025

The state plans to replace highway signs and sign supports along I-84 in Waterbury and across the rest of the state to comply with federal and state regulations. The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) says the new and improved signs will increase safety because they will be easier to see at night. Crews plan to update large overhead and on-ramp entrance signs.

CTDOT will also change the exit numbering system on I-84 from sequential numbering to a mileage-based system. Take a look at the new proposed exit numbers in Waterbury below.

I-84 Westbound:
  • Meadow Street/Bank Street (new exit 32C)
  • Union Street/Downtown Waterbury (new exit 33A)
  • CT-69, Hamilton Avenue (new exit 33B)
  • East Main Street/Scott Road (new exit 35)
  • Austin Road (new exit 36)
I-84 Eastbound:
  • Downtown Waterbury (new exit 33A)
  • Harpers Ferry Road/Reidville Drive (new exit 34)
  • Austin Road (new exit 36)

Construction is expected to start in June 2026.
