School Bus Safety as Students Return To Classroom

August 28, 2025

It's an exciting time of the year here in Waterbury as our students and educators returned to the classroom! As a teacher, I know firsthand the energy and anticipation that come with the first days of school. This new year is filled with opportunities for students to learn, grow, and build meaningful relationships with their teachers and friends. I wish every student a year full of discovery, success, and memorable experiences.

This season is also an important reminder to everyone in our community to please drive safely and watch for school buses. Protecting our students begins with our roads. By law, drivers must stop when a school bus displays its flashing red signal lights. The first offense for failing to do so is a $450 fine, and repeat violations can result in fines of $500 - $1,000, up to 30 days in jail, or both.

Let's work together to make this school year not only one of growth inside the classroom, but also one of safety and responsibility in our neighborhoods.
