Safely Reopening Colleges and Universities

July 13, 2020

Earlier this year, higher education institutions throughout the state closed their doors to in-person classroom learning. Students moved out of their dorms and shifted to online classes.

As our state works to contain the spread of COVID-19, parts of the economy are reopening, and K-12 school districts are strategizing how to safely and responsibly bring students back to the classroom. Connecticut's colleges and universities are also developing plans to safely provide an on-campus learning experience for students.

Tomorrow, July 14 at 12 p.m., the legislature's Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee will hold a virtual informational meeting to discuss reopening college and university campuses with higher education leaders across the state. Click here to read the agenda.

In May, the education committee of the Reopen Connecticut Advisory Group submitted detailed recommendations for a phased reopening of Connecticut's colleges and universities. The recommendations include a gradual reopening of campuses over the summer based on educational programs offered and whether residential services are provided. Additionally, the each higher education institution is required to file reopening plans with the Connecticut Department of Public Health detailing how they propose to:

  • Repopulate the campus;
  • Monitor health conditions to detect infection;
  • Contain the spread of disease when detected; and
  • Shut down the campus in the event it becomes necessary.
