Energy & Technology Committee Holds Hearing on Eversource Storm Response

August 28, 2020

Thursday the legislature's Energy & Technology Committee held an informational forum on Eversource's Tropical Storm Isaias response and July 2020 electric rate increases.

The storm was devastating and left in its trail trees toppled across electric wires and roads, and hundreds of thousands of residents in the dark for nearly a week. Our state pays some of the highest electricity prices in the continental U.S. and customers deserve better.

You can watch the forum on CT-N below.

Tropical Storm Isaias was not the first time our utility companies failed to provide an adequate and responsible response for our communities.

When I went door-to-door after the storm to offer assistance to those in need, a lot of people echoed the same thing - they wanted information. Had there been timely communication from Eversource, residents could have saved their food, expensive prescription medications, and a lot of the extra stress that came with losing power for nearly a week.

We cannot continue the same cycle of broken promises. I am thankful to the committee, including Chairs State Senator Norm Needleman and State Representative David Arconti, for working to hold these companies accountable. Ratepayers deserve better.

I had the opportunity to submit testimony on the matter and to urge that legislative action be taken and voted on during the next special session of the legislature. Read it here.
