September is National Suicide Prevention Month:  Please access the below resources, information, and support year-round for people affected by or struggling with mental health.  In 2018, 48,344 Americans died by suicide — more than the number of traffic fatalities and almost double the number of homicides for the year.

Locally in Hartford, The Jordan Porco Foundation‘s mission is to prevent suicide, promote mental health, and create a message of hope for young adults. They provide engaging and uplifting programming emphasizing peer-to-peer messaging promoting help-seeking behavior, self-care, and coping skills. Programs include the NineOutOfTen Ambassador program, freshcheckday which checks in with college students, and 4WhatsNext, which helps high school students with psychological resiliency.

In addition, Hartford HealthCare has resources at its website, including facts and resources which address communities of color.  If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts or behaviors, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1.800.273.8255.

The Hartford HealthCare Behavioral Health Network also offers a 24/7 Community Care Center with access to a licensed clinician, free of charge. If you need help or know of someone who may need help, call the CCC hotline at 1.833.621.0600 to be connected with a BHN clinician.

Some warning signs of suicide, according to Dr. John Santopietro, physician-in-chief of Hartford HealthCare’s Behavioral Health Network  include:

  • Significant shifts in mood and behavior.
  • Talking about feeling hopeless.
  • Sleeping too little or too much.
  • Posting on social media about end of life.
  • Talking about being a burden to others.
